About the course

The Master of Computing (Advanced) is a two-year postgraduate degree that combines advanced coursework with a substantial individual research thesis. It is designed for students who want to deepen professional computing capability while engaging with cutting-edge topics taught within ANU’s School of Computing. The program includes a significant research component and is accredited by the Australian Computer Society for Masters-level study in computing. The programme deepens expertise in software architecture, data systems, and emerging technologies for advanced IT leadership.

What you might learn

You develop advanced knowledge of software development and contemporary computing practice while building research capability through methods training and a capstone research project. Depending on your background, you can specialise in areas such as AI, machine learning, cyber security, data science, computer systems, human-centred computing, or theoretical foundations. The degree emphasises responsible innovation, professional practice, and the ability to undertake independent research in computing.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced technical and research-focused roles where deep computing expertise and leadership are valued. Typical pathways include R&D or senior engineering positions in software, AI/ML, cyber security, data platforms, and systems engineering across government, defence, finance, consulting, and technology firms. The substantial thesis and research training also support progression toward doctoral study. This Masters-level computing qualification supports careers in advanced IT and computer science.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 6.0/7.0, or a Bachelor (Hons) in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5/7 (or 2A Honours). Applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements and are assessed competitively; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
