About the course
The Master of Biotechnology at ANU is a two-year full-time postgraduate degree that integrates biology and chemistry to address challenges across medicine, agriculture, environmental sustainability and industry. You develop core scientific foundations, then tailor study through thematic options such as synthetic biology and medicinal chemistry. The program combines advanced coursework with a substantial practicum and research-focused training in Canberra’s strong science ecosystem for Master-level biotechnology study.
What you might learn
You will strengthen understanding of molecular and chemical principles underpinning biotechnology, and build the skills to design and evaluate biotech solutions. The degree develops capability in experimental thinking, research proposal development, scientific presentation and responsible innovation. Through elective themes (e.g., synthetic biology, medicinal chemistry and medical biotechnology) and a practicum, you gain interdisciplinary tools spanning bioinformatics, protein engineering and chemical biology within a Master coursework biotechnology program.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue roles in biotechnology and life-science sectors spanning pharmaceuticals, medical and diagnostic research, agricultural and industrial biotech, and environmental or biosecurity organisations. Typical pathways include research assistant/associate positions, biotechnology scientist roles, product or process development, regulatory or quality-related work, and science communication or policy support. Canberra location can offer exposure to government and research employers, supporting Master-level careers in biotechnology and related biomedical industries.
Entry requirements
Admission is based on holding an appropriate prior qualification in a relevant discipline. Applicants are expected to have suitable background knowledge in biological and/or chemical sciences to succeed in advanced coursework and the biotechnology practicum and research components.
