About the course
This one-year full-time master at ANU School of Art and Design combines advanced art history study with professional curatorial training in a practice-led research environment. You learn alongside Australia’s national cultural institutions and engage with current scholarship through specialist seminars. The program is strengthened by strong sector links and competitive internships, preparing graduates for professional practice in museums, galleries, and related cultural organisations at master’s level in arts and humanities.
What you might learn
You will develop critical and historical understanding of art and visual culture while building practical curatorial capabilities. The program strengthens skills in research, interpretation, collections and exhibition development, and professional communication through advanced seminars and applied projects. Through electives and opportunities such as museum internships, you learn to connect scholarly analysis with contemporary curatorial practice, building confidence to work at an advanced level in art history and curatorial studies.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue roles across museums, galleries, libraries and cultural organisations, including assistant curator/curator pathways, collections or exhibitions support, public programs and education, research assistance, and cultural project coordination. The program’s research seminars and internship opportunities help build professional networks and industry readiness, supporting careers in national and regional collecting institutions as well as related arts administration and cultural policy roles for master’s-level arts and humanities specialists.
