About the course

The Diploma in Music allows University of Melbourne undergraduates to build a formal music qualification alongside their main degree, either by extending existing musical training or exploring new academic and practical areas in music. The program is flexible and can be tailored to individual interests, with access to the full Melbourne Conservatorium of Music curriculum. Students study alongside Bachelor of Music students, supporting networking and development in a rigorous musical environment.

What you might learn

Students develop musicianship through a combination of practical and academic study, selecting from areas such as performance-focused study, ensemble work, aural training, composition and improvisation. The diploma aims to strengthen musical technique and critical understanding through engagement with music theory and history. It also supports integration of music study with an undergraduate degree, including opportunities for cross-crediting eligible subjects to accelerate completion.

Career outcome

Graduates can leverage the diploma to support portfolio careers in music alongside another discipline, strengthening their credibility for performance- and composition-related opportunities. The training can assist pathways into ensemble participation, community and professional performance contexts, and creative practice roles where musicianship and collaboration are valued. The diploma may also provide a foundation for further specialist music study and conservatorium-based networks that support emerging professional activity.

Entry requirements

This course is only available to applicants who are currently admitted to a University of Melbourne degree. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (with no band less than 6.0).
