About the course
The Graduate Diploma in Music (Practical Music) is a one-year program for graduates from any discipline who want to undertake advanced practical music study. It focuses on developing instrumental, vocal or conducting technique to a level equivalent to a fourth year of study, alongside building sophisticated stylistic and interpretive awareness of repertoire. Students also broaden their training through ensemble electives and supporting studies such as music language, aural studies, and historical/cultural/contextual subjects.
What you might learn
Students develop advanced practical performance or conducting skills and refine their interpretive and stylistic understanding across repertoire studies. The course aims to expand musicianship through ensemble participation and complementary studies in music language, aural training, and contextual/historical perspectives. It prepares graduates for further postgraduate pathways, including potential eligibility to apply for masters coursework or research in music.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue opportunities as performing musicians, vocalists, or conductors in professional and community music settings. The program supports pathways into ensemble work and broader music practice roles that draw on advanced musicianship, repertoire knowledge, and performance experience. It can also serve as preparation for further masters-level study, supporting progression into specialised performance, research, or higher-level professional practice.
Entry requirements
