About the course
The Graduate Diploma in Music (Ethnomusicology) is a one-year program for graduates from any discipline who want to undertake graduate-level study in music. It supports students to develop an ethnomusicology dissertation through focused seminars and the subject The Ethnography of Music, exploring key historical and contemporary issues in the field. Students also select from academic and non-Western ensemble electives aligned with their research interests, and the qualification can provide a pathway to further masters study in Music.
What you might learn
Students develop the ability to link musical analysis with cultural analysis through ethnomusicological approaches to research. The course builds capability in ethnographic representation, fieldwork methods, and ethical practice in field research while guiding students to become specialists in a chosen case study area. It also strengthens academic writing and research skills through dissertation-focused learning and relevant elective study.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue roles connected to music research and cultural practice, including work in arts and cultural organisations, community music contexts, and music programming or project support. The course also prepares students for further postgraduate study (coursework or research) that can lead toward academic and research-oriented careers in ethnomusicology and related disciplines. Skills in fieldwork, analysis and ethical research practice are applicable to roles involving documentation, curation, and cultural heritage work.
