About the course

This graduate certificate examines the history, context and contemporary practice of returning Indigenous ancestral remains and cultural objects from museums and institutions worldwide. It responds to growing repatriation activity and the need for specialist capability across museums, governments and community organisations. Taught by Indigenous and non-Indigenous experts, the program foregrounds Indigenous perspectives and supports work that contributes to healing, reconciliation and ethical heritage practice.

What you might learn

Students build advanced knowledge of repatriation principles, policy and practice, including the social, historical and ethical dimensions of colonial collecting. Learning emphasises Indigenous histories, knowledges and approaches, and how these inform respectful processes for ancestral remains and cultural materials. Through coursework and related options in museums, archives and heritage, students strengthen skills to plan, research and support repatriation activities in professional settings.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles supporting repatriation and restitution work in museums and galleries, libraries and archives, cultural heritage organisations, Indigenous community organisations, and government agencies. The qualification is relevant for professionals involved in collections management, provenance and archival research, policy development, community engagement, and heritage or museum practice. It can also support further research and study in museum, heritage and Indigenous studies contexts.

Entry requirements

Entry requires a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 4/7, or at least three years’ senior experience in repatriation practice in a community organisation, GLAM sector organisation, or government agency. Applicants must meet ANU English language admission requirements. An alternative pathway is completion (≥50% in each) of specified ANU micro-credentials plus application responses, CV and interview as required.
