About the course

The Graduate Certificate of Surgical Education is an industry-leading course for surgeons and other clinicians who want to pass on their experience and knowledge to the next generation. It provides a foundation in educational practice to optimise surgical training across the complex skill sets required for safe surgical practice. Delivered online through the Department of Surgery in partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), it addresses teaching and learning challenges in diverse clinical settings and the growing role of advanced technologies in surgical training.

What you might learn

Students develop a practical foundation in contemporary educational practice tailored to surgical and procedural training contexts. The course aims to strengthen participants’ capability to design, deliver and evaluate learning and teaching in varied clinical environments, incorporating appropriate methods and technologies. It supports practising clinicians to build confidence and competence as effective surgical educators while maintaining flexibility through online delivery.

Career outcome

Graduates may progress into education-focused roles within surgical and procedural training programs in hospitals, colleges and clinical networks. The course supports career development as a clinical educator involved in teaching, supervision, assessment and curriculum activities for trainees and multidisciplinary teams. It also provides a pathway into further study in surgical education (e.g., Graduate Diploma or Master of Surgical Education) to deepen leadership opportunities in health professional education.
