About the course

The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research and Leadership is an interdisciplinary coursework program designed to build leadership capability in Indigenous research or research involving Indigenous communities. The curriculum is underpinned by Indigenous perspectives and can be tailored to participants' work contexts and career goals. It comprises two core subjects, including a winter intensive subject delivered through both online and on-campus components.

What you might learn

Students develop high-level leadership skills and research capacity specifically for Indigenous research settings. The course strengthens participants’ ability to apply Indigenous perspectives in research design, practice and professional decision-making. It also supports learners to align study with their work context while preparing for leadership responsibilities in Indigenous research.

Career outcome

Graduates may progress into leadership roles in Indigenous research across universities, research institutes, government and community-controlled organisations. The qualification supports careers involving the governance, design and delivery of Indigenous-led or Indigenous-focused research programs and initiatives. Potential pathways include research leadership, program leadership, policy/research advisory roles, and senior positions supporting Indigenous research capacity and strategy.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the course must either have completed the Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research (GC-IRPRO), or have already completed a doctorate. The course is intended for people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have completed or are nearing completion of a doctoral degree and are ready for a leadership role. If close to thesis submission, a letter of support from the supervisor must indicate the applicant can complete the assessment requirements.
