About the course

This one-year honours program builds on the Bachelor of Public Policy and reflects ANU’s research-led approach. It provides advanced preparation for professional practice or further research study through deeper engagement with public policy theory and rigorous research training. You will design and undertake an independent research project, typically a substantial thesis, aimed at generating new insights or addressing complex policy problems.

What you might learn

You develop advanced understanding of public policy concepts, research principles and methods, and how to apply them to real-world policy challenges. The program strengthens skills in research design, evidence evaluation, and academic writing, culminating in a major supervised thesis project. You also build capability to frame complex questions, select appropriate methodologies, and communicate findings clearly to academic and policy audiences.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for policy and research-oriented roles across government, public agencies, NGOs, and international organisations, as well as research institutes and consulting. The honours year strengthens analytical and methodological expertise suited to policy analysis, program evaluation, and evidence-based decision-making. It also provides a strong pathway to higher degree by research (e.g., PhD) in public policy or related social sciences.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and college approval. A completed AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Public Policy (or equivalent) within the last two years is required, with a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% calculated from specified compulsory courses, and written approval from an identified thesis supervisor.
