About the course

The Bachelor of Music provides advanced training across a variety of musical disciplines through an immersive and practical curriculum. Students complete music core studies, music electives and complementary breadth subjects while majoring in one of six areas. The Composition major focuses on writing and notating music for live performance, grounded in the Western art music tradition while extending beyond it to support the development of an individual compositional voice.

What you might learn

Students develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the practical, theoretical and conceptual aspects of music. The course aims to broaden musical knowledge across styles and repertoire while building advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving through regular practical activities and theoretical studies. It also aims to develop performance and academic capabilities through participation in solo and ensemble opportunities and wider music activities.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue careers across composing and broader music industries, supported by practical training and opportunities for career experiences in local or international contexts. Potential pathways include work as a composer or creative practitioner for live performance and related professional settings, as well as roles across music production and editing contexts. An additional Honours year is available as a pathway to advanced graduate study options in music.
