About the course

This Undergraduate Certificate in Family History introduces you to tracing and interpreting family stories within wider historical contexts. You’ll build practical research and writing skills using sources such as oral histories, photographs, heirlooms, and digital and physical archives, supported by specialists across Australian, British, European and Asian history. The four units can count as full credit towards further study in family history at undergraduate level. The programme combines disciplinary knowledge, applied learning, and graduate competencies for professional career entry.

Career outcome

Graduates can apply research and communication skills to personal and community family-history projects, including writing and presenting evidence-based narratives. The course supports pathways into heritage and local-history activities, genealogy support roles, and entry-level work where archival research, data management and clear historical writing are valued. It also provides a foundation for further undergraduate study in family history and related arts and humanities disciplines. Preparing graduates for graduate employment, professional traineeships, and further postgraduate study.
