About the course

This one-year honours program builds on a medical science background and reflects ANU’s research-led approach. You undertake advanced study and an honours research project in medical science, drawing on complementary areas such as biology, neuroscience, chemistry and population health. Honours specialisations align with ANU strengths across science, medicine and health, and provide strong preparation for professional roles or future higher degree by research.

What you might learn

You develop advanced understanding of research principles, methods and theoretical concepts relevant to your honours specialisation. The program focuses on designing and implementing a substantial research project in medical science, strengthening skills in critical analysis, scientific communication, and problem solving. With supervision and delegated authority approval, you build capability to generate new understanding or propose solutions to complex medical science problems.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused and medically related science roles, or progression to higher degrees by research. The honours year supports pathways into biomedical and medical research, laboratory and analytical roles, population and public health research, and science-based work across universities, research institutes, government and industry. The program also strengthens transferable skills in evidence-based inquiry, data interpretation and scientific reporting.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and college approval. A recent (within 2 years) AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Medical Science (or equivalent) is required, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% calculated from the best 36 units in the discipline cognate to the chosen honours specialisation (excluding 1000-level courses).
