About the course

This one-year Honours program is an elite, research-focused extension of the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences for high-performing students. It combines advanced coursework with an Honours research project in mathematics, designed to deepen theoretical understanding and strengthen quantitative modelling capability. The degree supports students aiming for research-oriented roles across government, industry and commerce, or progression to higher degree research.

What you might learn

Students build advanced mathematical knowledge and research capability through a supervised Honours project and higher-level study. The program develops skills in rigorous reasoning, problem formulation, quantitative modelling and analysis, and communicating mathematical ideas. You learn to plan and deliver an independent research project in mathematics, working with academic supervision and meeting discipline expectations for scholarly methods and reporting.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for quantitatively intensive and research-oriented careers where advanced mathematics and modelling are valued. Outcomes include roles in analytics, quantitative modelling and research across government agencies, commercial and industrial sectors, and science-based organisations. The Honours year also provides a strong pathway to postgraduate research (e.g., PhD) and research assistant or junior analyst roles requiring high-level mathematical training.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements and are selected competitively. Entry requires an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% based on the best 36 units of mathematics courses (excluding 1000-level). You must have completed at least eight 2000/3000-level mathematics courses including four at 3000-level, and obtain written approval from an identified research supervisor.
