About the course

The ANU Bachelor of Genetics explores how DNA and genes shape organisms, health and evolution. You study core areas such as classical and molecular genetics, population genetics, bioinformatics and genomics, with options to follow interests in plant genetics, evolutionary genetics, or medicine and health. Teaching is informed by active research at ANU, including the Research School of Biology and the John Curtin School of Medical Research.

What you might learn

You will build strong foundations in biological and genetic principles and learn how to interpret genetic information using modern laboratory and computational approaches. The program develops understanding of gene replication and expression, genomics applications, and human disease genetics, alongside quantitative and data skills. You will also strengthen scientific reasoning, experimental design, analysis, and communication for working with complex biological data.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles in genetics and genomics across research, healthcare, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Potential pathways include laboratory or research assistant roles, genomic data and bioinformatics support, roles in medical research institutes, government or environmental science agencies, and work in biotech or pharmaceutical organisations. The degree also provides a foundation for further study toward honours, postgraduate research, or professional health-related pathways.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need an ATAR of 85 (or IB 32) or an equivalent qualification. Entry is subject to meeting ANU admission rules for the relevant applicant type (domestic or international). This program is not available for Semester 2 commencement, so students should apply for a Semester 1 start and ensure any prerequisites and documentation are completed by ANU deadlines.
