About the course

This one-year honours program extends the ANU Bachelor of Design with a research-led focus. You develop advanced understanding of design theory, research principles and methods while undertaking an independent honours project. The degree integrates studio practice with contextual investigation, supporting you to produce a coherent and speculative design outcome (often an exhibition or installation) that generates new insights or addresses complex design problems.

What you might learn

You will strengthen skills in design research, critical and theoretical thinking, and project development. Through coursework in research methods, communication and presentation, and a substantial thesis component, you learn to frame research questions, investigate contexts, analyse and synthesise evidence, and translate findings into a resolved design project. The program builds capability for professional practice and preparation for higher degree research pathways.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced roles in design practice and related creative industries where research, concept development and communication are central. Possible pathways include design research and strategy, creative direction, design consultancy, exhibition and project development, and roles that combine studio practice with analysis and stakeholder engagement. The honours year also supports progression into research-focused postgraduate study in design and allied fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific and English language requirements. Entry is competitive due to limited places; honours admission also depends on supervisory capacity and approval. You need an ANU Bachelor of Design (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark of at least 70% (based on the best 36 units excluding 1000-level) in relevant design/visual arts areas, plus written approval from an identified thesis supervisor.
