About the course
The Dance honours specialisation deepens dance artistry through embodied enquiry and research informed by contemporary theoretical concerns. Selection is based on a research-focused written proposal and a curated video portfolio demonstrating dance practice and its connection to the proposed project. Shortlisted applicants complete the application process with an online interview.
What you might learn
Students develop the ability to conceive and articulate a viable creative/research project in dance, grounded in relevant experience and contemporary contexts. The specialisation aims to strengthen practice-led research skills, critical reflection, and the capacity to communicate artistic intention and methodology. It also supports advanced development in a chosen dance style through focused investigation and performance-making inquiry.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue advanced professional pathways as dancers, choreographers, and performance-makers with strengthened research and conceptual development skills. The honours specialisation can support progression into practice-led research roles, creative development positions, and work in contemporary performance contexts. It may also provide preparation for further study or research training in performing arts disciplines.
Entry requirements
For entry into the specialisation, all applicants must meet the standard eligibility for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Degree with Honours), in addition to the following selection requirements: submission of a written proposal and a portfolio, plus an interview for shortlisted applicants only. The written proposal must be a 700–1000 word statement outlining the proposed research and summarising relevant experience. The portfolio must include selected video examples of practice as a dancer, choreographer, or performer, edited into a single clip under 10 minutes (or provided via a YouTube/Vimeo URL if files exceed 250MB, with no password protection). Shortlisted applicants must attend an online interview (approximately 30 minutes via Zoom) and be prepared to discuss the proposed creative/research project, motivation and expectations, commitment to research/practice work, and ability to support full-time study.
