About the course

This one-year honours program in computing is designed for high-achieving graduates seeking an intensive, research-focused experience within ANU’s School of Computing. You will work closely with academic staff on independent research and advanced coursework, building strong foundations for professional computing careers or further study. The program emphasises scholarly inquiry, problem solving and advanced technical depth in computer science.

What you might learn

You will develop research capability in computing through formal research-methods training and an extended research project carried out across consecutive semesters. The program builds advanced knowledge in computer science via 4000-level COMP electives while strengthening skills in planning and conducting investigations, analysing results, communicating research outcomes, and applying rigorous methods to complex computing problems under academic supervision.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced roles in the computing sector and for pathways into higher research degrees. Outcomes commonly include work as a computing professional in industry, government or research organisations, including roles involving advanced software and systems work, data-driven problem solving, technical leadership, and research or R&D-focused positions. The honours research project also supports progression to postgraduate study.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and also depends on supervisory capacity and approval by the relevant delegated authority. You need an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree (or equivalent) completed within the last two years in a cognate discipline, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% calculated from the best 36 units of cognate courses (excluding 1000-level).
