About the course
This PhD offers supervised research into the molecular basis of health and disease within Deakin’s School of Medicine. You can pursue projects spanning gene discovery, functional genomics, pre-clinical development and testing of new therapeutics, supported by advanced experimental platforms. Research strengths include immunity and infection, cancer, metabolic and psychiatric disorders, musculoskeletal and developmental biology, structural biology and nanomedicine, plus public and rural health topics in medicine.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for advanced research and specialist roles across universities, medical research institutes, hospitals and health services. The degree builds expertise in designing and conducting independent research, data analysis and scientific communication, supporting pathways into postdoctoral research, academic careers and translational research roles. It can also lead to positions in biotechnology and pharmaceutical R&D, clinical trial and research coordination, and evidence-based policy or evaluation roles in medicine.
