About the course

The Doctor of Philosophy – Arts is the University of Melbourne’s highest arts research degree, centred on producing a substantial independent thesis of approximately 80,000–100,000 words. Candidates undertake original research on a defined problem, issue or topic to make a significant contribution to knowledge in their discipline. Research students can access specialist HDR support such as lectures and seminars, research leadership programs and opportunities like three-minute thesis competitions, with specialisation available through GSHSS and the Asia Institute.

What you might learn

This course aims to develop advanced, discipline-specific research capability through sustained independent inquiry and thesis production. Students build high-level expertise in their chosen area, strengthening theoretical understanding and critical analysis while learning to design, conduct and communicate original research. The program also supports research development through structured HDR activities and leadership opportunities.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-intensive careers where advanced subject expertise and independent inquiry are required. The degree supports pathways into academia and higher education teaching, as well as research roles in government, cultural institutions, policy organisations, think tanks and industry. The thesis-based training also builds transferable skills in analysis, writing and project leadership applicable to specialist and leadership positions across the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Entry requirements

Entry to the Doctor of Philosophy – Arts requires you attain a minimum grade in an honours year or masters degree. You must also have the sponsorship and approval of a supervisor prior to enrolment. The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS) only accepts applications for Semester 1 commencement – there is no mid-year intake for the PhD, and you are expected to begin your degree by the first week of Semester 1.
