About the course
Deakin’s Doctor of Philosophy (Arts) is a supervised research degree in which you undertake an original, substantial project in an arts discipline. You work with an expert supervisory panel and access Deakin’s research facilities, partnerships and research centres. The program culminates in an 80,000–100,000 word thesis, or (for creative arts) a creative work plus exegesis. This is a PhD / Doctoral research degree in Arts & Humanities. The programme emphasises independent research, methodology, and thesis development aligned with the discipline's scholarly standards.
Career outcome
Graduates typically pursue research and leadership careers where advanced inquiry, critical analysis and scholarly communication are essential. Opportunities may include university teaching and research, policy and advisory roles in government, cultural and creative sector research, consultancy, think tanks, and research roles in community and not-for-profit organisations. The PhD also supports progression to specialist expert roles in Arts & Humanities fields through high-level research training.
