About the course

This free, self-paced online short course builds awareness of child and young person safety and how to prevent and respond to abusive behaviours. Grounded in children’s rights, it addresses common myths and misconceptions and offers practical, trauma-informed recommendations to support safer environments. Developed by researchers at the University of Tasmania’s Peter Underwood Centre, it can be started anytime and completed in around 1.5 hours. The programme develops education knowledge and teaching-related skills aligned with its qualification level.

What you might learn

You will learn to recognise why preventing and addressing abuse of children and young people matters, identify key risk factors and misconceptions about abuse, offenders and offending patterns, and outline steps individuals and organisations can take to build a child-friendly culture and a child-safe environment.

Career outcome

This short course supports professional development for people who work with children or contribute to child-safe practices in community and organisational settings. It can assist those in education, youth services, sport and recreation, health and community organisations to strengthen awareness of abuse risks and prevention strategies, and to promote child-friendly, rights-based, trauma-informed approaches. It is a non-award online short course in education and child safety. Preparing graduates for education-related roles and further study pathways matched to the programme level.
