About the course

The Master of Translation and Interpreting provides practical, theoretical and academic training for work in cross-cultural communication, with a focus on translation and interpreting between English and Chinese. Students develop skills through intensive small-group learning, simulated interpreting scenarios and extensive translation practice, while also engaging critically with texts and contexts. The course also builds capability with AI-driven translation technologies and human–AI collaboration, and offers capstone options including industry experience or a research pathway.

What you might learn

Students learn to translate and interpret accurately and professionally across written and spoken contexts while developing advanced bilingual and intercultural communication skills. The course builds critical thinking about language, meaning and context, and develops specialist capabilities aligned to particular domains. It also aims to prepare graduates to use contemporary translation technologies effectively and build a professional portfolio demonstrating industry-ready competence.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue careers as professional translators and interpreters working across English–Chinese contexts in government, business and commerce, and international relations. The skill set is also applicable to work supporting cross-border communication in legal and other specialised technical fields. With training aligned to industry practice and specialisation options, graduates are prepared for roles requiring high-level translation, interpreting and intercultural expertise.

Entry requirements

English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. Students with an undergraduate degree in a related discipline may be given advance standing.
