About the course

The Master of Tax is a globally recognised specialist tax law degree within the Melbourne Law Masters, designed for lawyers, accountants and other professionals advising on tax in business or government. It covers core and specialist areas of tax law and policy, using practical case studies to connect legal principles with real-world practice. The course is delivered flexibly, with options including intensive on-campus learning and seminar-style teaching, and offers a minor thesis option for students interested in independent research.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced expertise in the theories and policies underpinning taxation law and the institutions involved in its administration and interpretation, including Treasury, the ATO and the courts. The course aims to build the ability to analyse and apply tax law principles to complex scenarios, informed by practical casework and contemporary professional issues. It also develops understanding of national and international developments in tax practice, including global trends and reform debates influenced by bodies such as the OECD.

Career outcome

The degree supports careers in government and regulatory environments where tax law is developed, administered or interpreted, as well as in in-house advisory teams within businesses.
