About the course

This two-year program focuses on precision measurement and the development of advanced scientific instrumentation. It draws on ANU expertise across Physics, Earth Sciences, and Astronomy & Astrophysics, exposing students to real research-led examples such as imaging, optics, microprobes, and telescope instruments. Study combines coursework with individual and group project work, building interdisciplinary capability for both frontier science and practical industrial applications.

What you might learn

You will build strong foundations in noise, measurement, optics, electronics, data analysis, imaging methods, and systems integration, alongside rapid prototyping and scientific computing. The program develops an interdisciplinary approach to designing, building and evaluating instrumentation for scientific and applied contexts. It also strengthens communication, innovation and leadership capabilities through science-and-society and entrepreneurship-focused course options.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles where advanced measurement and instrumentation are critical, across research, industry and government. Typical pathways include scientific instrumentation or test-and-measurement engineer, research scientist/technical specialist, imaging or optics specialist, data acquisition and analysis roles, and R&D positions supporting astronomy, physics, earth and materials sciences. The degree also supports careers in innovation-led teams developing new sensing and diagnostic technologies.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a recognised Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 overall and a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 across at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline (best 8 counted if more completed). Undergraduate mathematics must be equivalent to ANU MATH2305 (Ordinary Differential Equations and Vector Calculus). Applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements; entry is competitive.
