About the course

This two-year, in-person double degree combines one year of Master of Public Policy study at ANU’s Crawford School with one year at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy. Drawing on strong research links between both institutions, the program builds capability for policy work across the Asia-Pacific. Graduates receive a Master of Public Policy award from each university, gaining comparative perspectives and networks in Australia and Japan.

What you might learn

You develop a grounding in contemporary policy debates in the social sciences and learn to apply theory to practical policy problems. The program strengthens skills in economic and political analysis, public sector management, and evidence-based policy research. Study across ANU and the University of Tokyo broadens regional understanding and supports developing professional judgement for designing, evaluating and communicating policy options in complex governmental and international settings.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for policy-focused roles across government, international organisations, NGOs and the private sector, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Typical pathways include policy analyst or adviser, program and evaluation officer, public sector manager, international development or diplomacy-related policy roles, and research or consulting positions. The dual-institution experience supports careers needing cross-country policy insight, strong analytical capability, and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be currently enrolled in ANU’s Master of Public Policy (MPUPP). Entry also requires a relevant bachelor degree (or equivalent) with GPA 5/7, or GPA 4/7 plus either at least 3 years relevant professional experience, or a graduate certificate/diploma (GPA 4/7), or 48 postgraduate units (GPA 4/7). Alternatives include GRE minimum scores plus experience, or 10 years relevant experience. English language requirements apply.
