About the course

Offered by the Crawford School of Public Policy, this program examines how public policy is developed and implemented through key institutions, processes and governance arrangements. It is designed for graduates and working professionals seeking careers in policy roles in government and beyond. Students build a strong grounding in policy processes, analysis and research, with interactive, case-based learning focused on contemporary policy challenges.

What you might learn

Students develop practical capabilities to analyse policy problems, apply policy and governance frameworks, and design evidence-informed solutions. The program builds skills in policy research methods, economic and political analysis, and clear, persuasive communication for decision-makers. Through case-based teaching, students learn to evaluate trade-offs and work effectively in complex, interconnected and increasingly digital public policy environments.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for policy and advisory careers across the public sector and organisations working with government. Typical pathways include policy analyst/adviser roles, public sector management and program/policy evaluation positions, as well as roles in regulatory, social, economic, environmental, development, foreign and defence policy areas. The degree also supports careers in think tanks, NGOs, international agencies and consulting requiring strong policy analysis and communication skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent), typically with GPA 5/7. Alternatives include GPA 4/7 plus either 3 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 work experience, a relevant graduate certificate/diploma, 48 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7, or a graduate certificate plus work experience. GRE may be accepted (155 Verbal, 155 Quantitative, 4.0 Writing) with 3 years experience; or 10 years relevant experience.
