About the course

The Master of Philosophy - Health Sciences is an internationally recognised masters (by research) degree designed to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research. Students undertake a research project and produce a thesis demonstrating critical application of specialist knowledge and an independent contribution to scholarship in health sciences. Research projects are available across departments including Audiology and Speech Pathology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Social Work, and Optometry and Vision Sciences, aligned to broad research themes such as cancer survivorship, child health and wellbeing, immunology and inflammation, and recovery and rehabilitation.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced research capability through independent, sustained investigation under supervision. The course aims to build specialist knowledge in a health sciences field and strengthen skills in critical analysis, research design, and scholarly communication. By completing a thesis, students demonstrate the ability to contribute original insights to existing research and scholarship.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles across health services, universities, research institutes, and government or policy settings where advanced investigation and evidence generation are required. The thesis-based training supports pathways into further research degrees (including doctoral study) and roles contributing to evaluation, service improvement, and translation of evidence into practice. Opportunities may align with areas such as rehabilitation, clinical and allied health research, public and community health, and health workforce or service development.
