About the course
The Master of Music Therapy prepares graduates to practise as music therapists in settings such as hospitals, special schools, aged-care facilities, community health programs and private practice. The program provides advanced study in the theory, practice and research of music therapy, covering approaches across the lifespan. Students develop practical musicianship and therapeutic methods through Music Therapy Methods classes and substantial supervised clinical training.
What you might learn
Students learn evidence-informed music therapy theory and develop applied clinical skills for working with individuals and groups across diverse ages and needs. The course builds competencies in voice and guitar skills, improvisation, song-based and performance-based interventions, and receptive music therapy. Graduates also gain professional practice capability through supervised placements and training aligned to registration as a music therapist in Australia.
Career outcome
Graduates can pursue roles as music therapists in hospitals, schools, aged care, disability and community health services, and private practice settings. The qualification supports work delivering therapeutic programs for individuals and groups, and collaborating within multidisciplinary health and education teams. On completion, graduates are eligible for Registration as Music Therapists (RMT) with the Australian Music Therapy Association (Inc.).
Entry requirements
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor's degree and have a high level of formal music training. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
