About the course

The Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) is a practice-based coursework degree integrating orchestral, chamber and solo repertoires. The two-year program connects students with industry professionals through partnerships with local and regional orchestras and provides ensemble participation, Conservatorium classes and elective placement opportunities. Students receive individual lessons each semester and perform in end-of-semester performances including concertos and recitals, supported by world-class facilities at the Ian Potter Southbank Centre.

What you might learn

Students develop as well-rounded performers across solo, orchestral and chamber music, with all three repertoires studied as core components of the degree. The course builds advanced instrumental technique through regular individual tuition and sustained performance practice in symphonic ensembles. It also prepares students for professional orchestral careers by developing audition-readiness and deepening interpretive understanding of orchestral repertoire through targeted training and industry engagement.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for professional work as orchestral musicians, supported by audition preparation and extensive ensemble experience. The program’s industry partnerships and placement opportunities help build professional networks and practical musicianship in real performance settings. Career pathways may include orchestral and chamber ensemble performance, freelance performance work, and related roles in the performing arts sector where high-level instrumental expertise is required.
