About the course
The Master of Music (Musicology) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is a research-focused degree that develops independent scholarship in musicology. You will undertake supervised research culminating in a 25,000–40,000 word thesis, with selected coursework to strengthen analytical and disciplinary foundations. It suits students pursuing topics such as music theory, popular music studies or ethnomusicology, and can provide a pathway to PhD study in musicology at master’s level.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue careers requiring advanced research and writing skills in music and the humanities, including doctoral study and academic pathways. Potential outcomes include roles in universities and research organisations, music archives and libraries, museums and cultural institutions, publishing and editorial work, and arts administration where specialist musicological expertise is valued.
