About the course
This program at ANU’s Crawford School of Public Policy develops advanced expertise in international and development economics. You build strong analytical capability to evaluate policy issues across trade, finance, development, and the environment, with flexibility to choose electives in areas such as international trade, monetary policy, econometrics, and environmental/resource economics. It is a two-year Masters degree focused on applied economic policy in Economics.
What you might learn
You will strengthen core skills in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical methods and econometric techniques, then apply them to real policy problems. The degree emphasises rigorous quantitative analysis, evidence-based policy evaluation, and the ability to interpret economic data for decision-making in government and international contexts. You also complete research-based project work to develop applied research and professional communication skills in Economics.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for analyst and policy roles in government agencies, central banks, international organisations, NGOs, and consulting, working on development, trade, macroeconomic policy, and environmental/resource issues. The quantitative training supports careers in economic modelling, forecasting, program evaluation, and applied econometrics, as well as progression to further study. This is a two-year Masters qualification supporting professional careers in Economics. Preparing graduates for senior management, consulting, entrepreneurship, and organisational leadership roles.
Entry requirements
Entry requires a recognised Bachelor degree (or equivalent). Pathways include a Bachelor with GPA 5/7; or GPA 4/7 plus either 3 years full-time equivalent relevant professional experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1), or a relevant Graduate Certificate (GPA 4/7). Applicants may also qualify with a Graduate Diploma (GPA 4/7) or 48 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. GRE General test may be used.
