About the course

The Master of History (Advanced) at ANU offers an intensive pathway for high-achieving students to undertake advanced historical study in a research-rich environment. You’ll learn with leading historians and benefit from Canberra’s national cultural institutions and collections. The program combines specialised coursework with a substantial supervised thesis, and can be taken on campus with some online course availability. This is a Masters-level qualification in History within Arts and Humanities.

What you might learn

You will build advanced capabilities in historiography, historical research design, and critical analysis of primary and secondary sources. The program develops skills in constructing evidence-based arguments, engaging with major debates across historical fields, and communicating research findings clearly. With dedicated research training and supervision for the thesis component, graduates are prepared to undertake independent scholarship at a high level. This Masters program focuses on advanced research skills in History (Arts and Humanities).

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles where strong research, analysis and writing are valued, including museums and galleries, archives and libraries, government and policy, cultural institutions, education, publishing, and research support roles. The advanced thesis experience also provides preparation for further higher degree research (such as a PhD) and competitive research-focused careers. This Masters qualification supports professional and research pathways in History across the Arts and Humanities sector.

Entry requirements

Applicants need either a cognate Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum GPA 6/7 plus approval from an identified supervisor for the research project/thesis; or a Bachelor degree plus a cognate Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma with minimum GPA 5/7 plus supervisor approval. Applicants must also meet ANU English language admission requirements. To enrol in thesis courses, written supervisor agreement is required in advance of the thesis semester.
