About the course

This program explores tourism through the lens of cultural and natural heritage, combining heritage studies with management practice. It builds a systematic understanding of heritage tourism, with opportunities to engage with cultural institutions and real-world heritage contexts. The degree prepares graduates to analyse global issues affecting heritage destinations and to contribute to sustainable heritage development and tourism management in government and industry settings.

What you might learn

Students develop critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate heritage tourism challenges, including sustainability, governance and cultural values. The program builds capability in evidence-based management and marketing alongside heritage-specific knowledge such as intangible heritage and World Heritage contexts. Through research training and practical experiences (e.g., field school or internships), students strengthen applied problem-solving, communication and professional skills for managing heritage tourism projects and strategies.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles across heritage, tourism and cultural sectors, including tourism development and destination management, heritage site or museum programs, cultural policy and planning, and heritage interpretation and visitor experience. Opportunities may be found in government agencies, cultural institutions, NGOs and private tourism or consulting organisations. The management specialisation options also support careers in areas such as marketing, project management, leadership, digital transformation and international business.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Minimum entry is a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least GPA 5.0/7.0; selection is competitive and applicants may be ranked using GPA calculated excluding the final semester, with further checks using earlier semesters and/or higher English proficiency. Alternative pathways include a relevant Graduate Certificate with GPA thresholds and/or substantial ANZSCO Skill Level 1 professional experience.
