About the course

This two-year program develops advanced knowledge of general and applied linguistics in a multilingual world. You explore areas such as structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition and change, language contact, teaching languages, forensic linguistics, and language documentation. The degree emphasises engagement with contemporary research and methods, with guided research activities and the option to study additional languages as part of the program.

What you might learn

You will build specialist understanding of how languages are structured, used and learned, and how they vary and change across time and communities. The program develops research literacy and methodological skills through qualitative and quantitative approaches, and strengthens your ability to analyse language in real-world contexts such as education, intercultural communication and forensic settings. It also supports development of linguistic writing and research project capabilities.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles in language teaching and education, language policy and assessment, intercultural communication, and research support in linguistics-related projects. The program can also provide foundations for work in areas where language expertise is valued, including forensic linguistics, documentation of endangered languages, and language-focused roles in government or community organisations. It also prepares students for further postgraduate research in linguistics. Preparing graduates for education leadership, instructional design, and advanced teaching specialist roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a relevant bachelor degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. Admission may consider prior tertiary study and academic performance, and may include additional requirements for advanced programs such as evidence of suitable preparation for higher-level coursework and research. English language proficiency requirements apply for applicants whose prior study was not conducted in English.
