About the course

The Master of Fine Arts is a graduate research degree that develops advanced artistic practice alongside research into contemporary arts and culture. Students complete a substantial original research project supported by high-quality research training and independent academic supervision, with learning positioned in an international context. The program culminates in examination of a thesis that may be written-only or a combination of creative work and a written component.

What you might learn

The course aims to help suitably qualified candidates develop research capability and mastery in their chosen field of artistic practice. Students build advanced skills in independent inquiry, critical reflection and the articulation of practice-led research through written and/or creative outputs. Through supervision and a research environment, candidates strengthen artistic and intellectual leadership potential.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced professional practice as artist-researchers and for leadership roles within contemporary arts and cultural sectors. Depending on the discipline area, outcomes may include careers in performance, exhibition, creative production, film/media, theatre-making, design and related cultural practice. The research training also supports pathways into doctoral study and academic or research-focused roles in the arts.
