About the course
The Master of Creative Arts Therapy is a blended learning program that trains students to practise psychotherapy using creative modalities, with a specialisation in either drama therapy or dance movement therapy. The course combines theory, methods, research and professional practice across health, education and community contexts, with an emphasis on working with individuals and groups. Students complete supervised industry placements and learn through experiential, theoretical and practice-based approaches, including on-campus intensives at Southbank.
What you might learn
Students develop the knowledge and applied skills to use drama or dance/movement as therapeutic modalities within ethical, professional practice. The course builds capability in therapeutic methods, reflective practice, and working collaboratively in diverse settings while maintaining appropriate boundaries and self-regulation. Graduates gain foundations in research-informed practice and professional conduct required for practice and registration pathways.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue careers as creative arts therapists specialising in drama therapy or dance movement therapy across community, health and education sectors. Employment pathways include roles delivering therapeutic programs with individuals and groups in hospitals, mental health and wellbeing services, schools, disability and community organisations, and private practice settings. The qualification supports eligibility for professional registration with relevant associations such as DTAA and ANZACATA (subject to association requirements).
