About the course

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DCD) is a three-year, full-time specialist training program for qualified general dentists to develop advanced expertise in one chosen dental specialty. It provides in-depth clinical education across seven specialty areas and includes supervised, hands-on experience in clinical settings such as the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and affiliated clinics. The program is accredited by the Australian Dental Council, supporting pathways to specialist registration.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced specialist clinical capabilities and decision-making skills within their selected dental discipline, alongside deeper academic and research skills relevant to specialty practice. The course aims to keep practitioners at the forefront of emerging knowledge and techniques in their field while strengthening professional competence for complex patient care. It also prepares graduates to meet accreditation and professional standards required for specialist practice.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared to work as registered dental specialists in their chosen discipline, including roles in specialist private practice and public dental services. The advanced training also supports careers in academia, clinical education, and research within dentistry and oral health. With accredited specialist preparation, graduates can pursue specialist registration and practise as a specialist across Australia and New Zealand.

Entry requirements

The DCD is suitable for general dentists looking to specialise in a specific dental field. To apply, you’ll need at least two years of full-time clinical experience after completing your dental degree.
