About the course

The Master of Biotechnology develops advanced capability across the biotechnology pipeline, combining biological and medical science with commercial and business skills to help bring technologies and therapeutics to market. Students build industry connections in Melbourne’s Biomedical Precinct and gain practical experience through an extended placement or project. The course prepares graduates to work across areas such as health, agribusiness, food and other technology-focused sectors.

What you might learn

Students learn to translate biotechnology research and innovation into real-world products, processes and solutions, integrating scientific foundations with market and commercial considerations. The program builds specialist knowledge in areas such as genomics and molecular biology while strengthening professional capabilities in communication, leadership and teamwork. Through industry or research-based placement options, students develop applied problem-solving skills and professional readiness for biotech workplaces.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles across the biotechnology and biomanufacturing sector, including work in health and therapeutics development, agribusiness/AgriPharma and related technology-driven industries. The strong industry engagement and placement experience support pathways into product and process development, industry consulting on technical problems, and roles bridging science and commercialisation. The course also provides preparation for research-oriented careers through a research placement option with independent project experience.

Access Melbourne is available. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
