About the course

The Master of Applied Criminology is designed for current or aspiring criminal justice professionals seeking advanced, practice-relevant criminology training. Taught by expert researchers with strong government and industry links, the program focuses on analysing crime and responses to it across Australia, the Asia-Pacific and internationally. It supports both professional practice and policy-focused pathways, with recommended commencement in Semester 1 for a strong theory foundation.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced criminological knowledge and applied analytical skills, using established and emerging theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence. The program builds capability in critical, systematic analysis and strengthens research literacy through advanced methods training. Coursework supports informed decision-making for policy and practice, helping students interpret data, evaluate interventions and understand complex social and institutional drivers of crime and regulation.

Graduates are prepared for professional roles across the criminal justice system and related policy environments. Career pathways include policing, corrections, justice and security agencies, regulatory and compliance work, and government or NGO policy roles. Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU English language requirements and competitive entry applies. A cognate Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum GPA 5/7; or cognate Bachelor GPA 4/7 plus a Graduate Certificate GPA 4/7; or cognate Bachelor/Graduate Certificate with GPA 4/7 plus 3 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 work experience; or a cognate Graduate Diploma with GPA 4/7; or 10 years relevant Skill Level 1 work experience.
