About the course
This two-year full-time Master of Actuarial Studies at ANU develops advanced capability to measure and manage risk in areas such as insurance, investments, health and climate. You learn to apply mathematical, statistical, financial and economic tools to complex real-world problems, supported by a structured set of core actuarial courses and a choice of electives across analytics, finance and computing.
What you might learn
You will build strong actuarial and quantitative skills in data analysis, mathematical statistics, regression, survival models, life contingencies, financial mathematics and risk modelling. The program emphasises applying theory to real decision-making through the actuarial control cycle, developing technical modelling capability, critical thinking and professional judgement. Electives allow you to extend skills in areas like machine learning, econometrics and finance.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for careers analysing and managing financial and non-financial risk across insurance, superannuation, banking, investment and consulting. Typical pathways include actuary, risk analyst, pricing analyst, capital modelling specialist, quantitative analyst, data/analytics roles and risk management positions in government or industry. The training is also relevant to roles dealing with uncertainty in health, climate and infrastructure.
Entry requirements
Admission is based on meeting ANU postgraduate entry requirements for this program, including an appropriate prior qualification and background suitable for actuarial studies. Applicants may need to demonstrate sufficient quantitative preparation in mathematics and statistics. English language proficiency requirements apply for those who have not studied in English, and any additional program conditions may be assessed as part of the application.
