About the course
The Diploma of Languages prepares students for multilingual, international contexts through in-depth study of the language and culture of one or more languages. Students can complete the equivalent of a major in a single language, or—where prior learning allows—combine advanced study in one language with a second language minor or other approved language-related courses. It can be studied alongside another ANU program.
What you might learn
Students develop practical language proficiency and cultural understanding through structured coursework and progressive language training. The program supports deep engagement with linguistic systems, communication skills and intercultural awareness, and can be tailored to prior experience via advanced minors, placement pathways and combinations across languages and related disciplines to broaden regional and cultural expertise.
Career outcome
Graduates can apply language and intercultural skills in roles that value multilingual communication, including government and diplomacy, international business, education, tourism and cultural organisations. The diploma can also strengthen employability in any field requiring engagement with diverse communities or overseas partners, and supports further study by adding recognised language competence to another qualification.
Entry requirements
Applicants typically need an ATAR of 80 for admission. The diploma can be taken concurrently with another ANU program. Students starting in Semester 2 should note beginner language courses are generally only available from Semester 1; Semester 2 entry may require a language placement test and suitable course availability is not guaranteed.
