About the course

The Graduate Diploma of Surgical Education is an industry-leading program for surgeons and other procedural clinicians who want to develop expertise in teaching and learning within surgical training. Delivered fully online through the Department of Surgery in partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), it focuses on educational practice suited to diverse clinical settings and the complex skills required for safe surgical practice. The course is designed to be flexible for practising professionals and also provides a pathway into the Master of Surgical Education.

What you might learn

Students build a strong foundation in contemporary educational practice to optimise surgical training and assessment in real clinical environments. The course develops capability to design, deliver and evaluate surgical education that responds to workplace-based learning challenges and emerging technologies in surgery and training. Graduates strengthen their effectiveness as educators and leaders within surgical education programs.

Career outcome

Graduates can progress into roles supporting and leading surgical and procedural education in hospitals, colleges and clinical training programs. Career pathways include surgical educator, clinical teacher, supervisor of training, program or curriculum contributor, and roles in assessment and training innovation across surgical and procedural specialties. The qualification also supports progression into advanced study in surgical education (e.g., the Master of Surgical Education).
