About the course

Scientific issues shape many major global challenges. This graduate certificate introduces science communication through a mix of practical training and theory, helping you communicate clearly and persuasively across contexts such as policy, media, public engagement, health and culture (depending on electives). Taught by leading science communicators at ANU, it suits both new and experienced professionals and can be used as a pathway to the Master of Science Communication.

What you might learn

You will build core capabilities to design and deliver effective science communication and engagement activities. The program develops skills in tailoring messages for different audiences and channels, applying communication theory, and working across settings such as online communication, journalism, public speaking, popular culture and government. You will learn to plan communication projects that create impact and to respond to risks such as misinformation in science-related debates.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles where translating evidence for diverse audiences is essential. Potential pathways include science communication and engagement roles in universities and research organisations, government and policy agencies, museums and public programs, NGOs, health promotion, media and journalism, digital content and social media, and consultancy supporting public understanding of science. The qualification also supports professionals seeking to add communication leadership skills to technical or research careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 4.0/7. Admission is competitive and requires meeting ANU academic and non-academic requirements, including English language proficiency. Ranking may consider GPA calculated excluding the final semester and, if needed, additional GPA measures and/or higher English proficiency. Qualifications are assessed and converted to ANU’s 7-point GPA scale.
