About the course

This graduate certificate offers research-led introductory study of Oceania through a transdisciplinary Pacific Studies lens. It emphasises Indigenous Pacific voices, knowledges and methodologies, and examines the region’s diversity and complexity across culture, arts, languages, politics, security and development. The program can be taken as a standalone qualification or used as a pathway into the Master of Pacific Studies for deeper engagement with the Pacific region.

What you might learn

Students build foundational understanding of historical and contemporary dynamics in the Pacific and develop critical perspectives for analysing regional issues. The program introduces core themes such as human security and wellbeing, politics of aid and development, and approaches to Pacific-focused research. It also strengthens skills in interpreting Pacific contexts using interdisciplinary tools and culturally informed methodologies grounded in Indigenous perspectives.

Career outcome

Graduates can apply Pacific regional expertise in government, diplomacy, policy, and international development roles, including work focused on aid, security, and regional cooperation. The qualification supports careers with NGOs, regional organisations, community and cultural institutions, media and consulting, or further study in Pacific Studies and related disciplines. It is suited to professionals needing Pacific literacy for roles engaging with Oceania stakeholders and issues.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a relevant prior qualification with at least GPA 4/7 (Bachelor, Graduate Diploma, or Graduate Certificate), or completion of 24 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. Alternative entry may be via GRE (minimum 155 verbal, 155 quantitative, 4.0 writing) plus at least 3 years relevant ANZSCO skill level 1 work experience, or 5 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience.
