About the course
This Graduate Certificate provides research-led study of Oceania through a transdisciplinary Pacific Studies framework. It engages with the region’s diversity and complexity, foregrounding Indigenous Pacific voices, knowledges and methodologies. Students gain an introductory grounding in historical and contemporary currents across culture, arts, linguistics, politics, security, development and research methods. The award can be taken as a standalone credential or used as a pathway into the Master of Pacific Studies.
What you might learn
Students develop foundational knowledge of Pacific societies and key debates shaping Oceania today. The program builds capability to analyse cultural and political dynamics, human security, aid and development, and to engage with Pacific-focused research methods and ethical approaches. Through core and elective choices, students learn to apply transdisciplinary perspectives and critically interpret evidence and scholarship, with an emphasis on Indigenous perspectives and inclusive methodologies relevant to Pacific contexts.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue roles needing Pacific regional expertise in government, diplomacy and policy, international development, NGOs, security and humanitarian agencies, research support, and cultural and community organisations. The qualification can strengthen careers involving Pacific engagement, stakeholder collaboration and program design, including work in regional governance, aid effectiveness, social policy, and community development. It also provides a stepping stone to further postgraduate study in Pacific Studies and related fields.
Entry requirements
Applicants need a relevant prior qualification: a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with minimum GPA 4/7, or a Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate with GPA 4/7, or completion of 24 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. Alternatively, entry may be via GRE (minimum 155 Verbal, 155 Quantitative, 4.0 Writing) plus at least 3 years related ANZSCO Skill Level 1 work experience, or 5 years related work experience. English requirements also apply.
