About the course

This graduate certificate is a national professional qualification focused on nuclear security and safeguards. Co-designed with the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (DFAT), it builds capability for regulating and assuring the safe, accountable use of nuclear materials and technologies. The program brings together regulation, policy and technical foundations to support professionals working with Australia’s international nuclear safeguards obligations.

What you might learn

Students develop foundational knowledge of nuclear safeguards frameworks, institutions and standards, alongside practical approaches used in safeguards work. The program also strengthens understanding of core nuclear science concepts relevant to oversight and regulation, and builds capability to analyse governance and regulatory technologies in a complex international environment. Graduates gain a multidisciplinary base spanning law/policy, practice and technical literacy.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles supporting nuclear safeguards, security and non-proliferation functions across government and industry. Career pathways may include regulatory and compliance roles, policy and governance positions, safeguards program support, international obligations and assurance work, and advisory roles requiring understanding of nuclear materials oversight. The qualification is relevant for professionals working with nuclear regulation, security policy and related risk governance.

Entry requirements

Applicants need one of: a Bachelor degree (or honours) with minimum GPA 4/7; or a completed Graduate Certificate/Diploma/Masters/PhD with GPA 4/7; or 24 units of postgraduate study with GPA 4/7; or 5 FTE years professional experience at ANSCO Skill Level 1 in a related field.
