About the course

The Graduate Certificate of Environment is a flexible postgraduate qualification designed for students who want to build or extend expertise in environmental and sustainability challenges. It provides an entry point to further coursework study and lets you tailor learning through a selection of advanced environment courses. Study areas span policy and science perspectives, society–environment interactions, research approaches, and systems thinking applied to complex environmental problems.

What you might learn

Students develop broad, contemporary understanding of environment and sustainability issues and how social, scientific and policy factors interact. The program builds skills in analysing complex environmental problems, applying systems thinking, and working with communities and stakeholders in resource management contexts. Coursework supports stronger communication of environmental ideas and evidence, and introduces approaches used in environmental research, planning and decision-making across diverse real-world settings.

Career outcome

This graduate certificate can support entry into, or progression within, environment-focused roles across government, NGOs, consulting and industry, particularly where sustainability and policy intersect with science. Graduates may pursue work in environmental policy and program support, community and stakeholder engagement, conservation and natural resource management, sustainability coordination, or related project roles. It also provides a pathway to more advanced study in environment and sustainability disciplines.

Applicants must meet ANU program and English language requirements. Minimum entry is a bachelor degree (or equivalent) with GPA 4/7, or a graduate certificate/diploma with GPA 4/7, or 24 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7.
