About the course

This graduate certificate offers specialised postgraduate study in demography and population issues within a research-led environment. You learn to apply demographic thinking to real-world challenges such as ageing, migration and population growth. The program uses scenario-based learning and connects students with leading researchers. Study is multi-modal, with many courses available online, and the award can provide a pathway into related ANU masters programs.

What you might learn

Students develop practical capability in demographic techniques and population analysis, supported by strong research, writing and analytical training. The program builds confidence in interpreting population data, understanding demographic theory and linking evidence to policy and social questions. Through scenario-based tasks and engagement with expert researchers, you strengthen quantitative and qualitative reasoning and learn to communicate demographic insights clearly for professional and academic contexts.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles that require population analysis and evidence-based advice across government, research and policy settings. Typical opportunities include demographer or population analyst roles, social research and evaluation positions, and work in planning, health, migration, community services or international development. The skills also support progression into further study in social research or public policy and employment in organisations using census and survey data.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a recognised Bachelor degree (or higher award such as Graduate Certificate/Diploma, Masters, PhD) or equivalent, typically with a minimum GPA of 4.0/7. Alternatively, 24 units of postgraduate study with a GPA of 4.0/7 may be accepted. All applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements; admission is competitive and meeting minima does not guarantee entry.
