About the course
This 12-month, part-time and mostly online graduate certificate introduces the key concepts and techniques used to explore for and evaluate mineral and energy deposits. It is designed for people without prior geology study, including those working in or alongside the resources sector (e.g., finance, investment, administration and technical roles). Study is mainly online with a short field-based component in Kalgoorlie focused on practical geology skills. The programme deepens scientific methodology, data interpretation, and applied research skills for laboratory and field-based careers.
What you might learn
You’ll build foundational capability to identify and classify minerals and rocks, apply geoscientific concepts to explain their formation, and analyse and communicate geoscience data for exploration contexts. The course also develops problem-solving under uncertainty, awareness of environmental and social impacts of resource extraction and geohazards, understanding of First Peoples perspectives, and safe collaboration across the minerals and energy value chain.
Career outcome
Graduates gain geoscience literacy to better support mineral and energy exploration and evaluation work, particularly in roles that interface with technical teams. The course can help professionals in finance, investment, administration and non-geological technical positions interpret geological information, communicate with geoscientists, and contribute to exploration decision-making and stakeholder discussions. It also provides a pathway into further postgraduate study in mineral exploration geoscience.
